How to Knit a Brioche Cable

The Brioche Cable Knitting Stitch is a 1 row repeat with a different set-up row and a unique cable row every 18 rows, or so. The first row, which is the set-up row, is the foundation for the rest of the pattern.

About the Brioche Cable Stitch

The Brioche Cable Knitting Stitch is a combination of the Brioche Stitch & Cable Knit Stitch

Even though this is a cable stitch this IS a reversible pattern, meaning that the front and back are the same. Well, same-ish, one side has a left leaning cable and the other side has a right leaning cable. Both sides are beautiful!

This stitch creates beautiful ribs similar to the fisherman’s rib stitch.

If you’re a garter stitch scarf or blanket and you’d like to add this cable pattern, having a few reverse stockinette stiches on either side of your cable will give it more definition, so it “pops.” However, I like it with a garter stitch background because it makes your knitted project reversible too!

Even though this brioche cable stitch requires your full attention, it’s easier than it looks!

There are the same number of increases and decreases on each row, so you should always have the same number of stitches on the needles.

Skill level: Intermediate / Advanced Beginner

The Brioche Cable Stitch is an intermediate level stitch that requires some experience with the brioche stitch and a cable knit stitch.

If you’re new to the brioche stitch watch the Brioche Stitch Video Tutorial and learn this new technique to create this unique brioche cable!

Be patient with yourself. With some time and practice you’ll get the hang of the pattern and be creating beautifully squishy cables before you know it!

Yarn, Needles & Notions

Yarn Weight: Super Bulky
Yardage: 35-45 yards (32 – 41 meters)
Suggested Yarn: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick
Needle Size: US 11 (8mm) Knitting Needles
Cable Needle
Darning Needle / Tapestry Needle / Yarn Needle
Scissors
Stitch Marker (optional)

Note: I like using a DPN for the cable needle. It’s wooden to help grab the stitches, so they don’t slip off. The cable needle needs to be sturdy, as this is a tight cable stitch.

Yarn Substitutions

You can use any category of yarn you’d like. To get the right gauge, start with the recommended needle size. If you’re stitches are too loose, use smaller needles and if you’re stitches are too tight use larger needles.
