Pattern:

  • Start by knitting in the round using the magic loop method.
  • CO 4 STS, place a stitch marker in between each stitch, with a unique stitch marker for the beginning of your round, split 2 STS per needle. {or you can use DPN’s.}

  • Round 1: *K1, SM* {repeat 4 times}
  •  
  • Round 2: *INC1, K1, INC1, SM, K1, SM* {repeat one more time for the other side}
  • Round 3: *K3, SM, INC1, K1, INC1, SM* {repeat one more time for the other side}
  •  
  • Round 4: *INC1, K3, INC1, SM, K3, SM* {repeat one more time for the other side}
  • Round 5: *K5, SM, INC1, K3, INC1, SM* {repeat one more time for the other side}
  •  
  • Round 6: *INC1, K5, INC1, SM, K5, SM* {repeat one more time for the other side}
  • Round 7: *K7, SM, INC1, K5, INC1, SM* {repeat one more time for the other side}
  •  
  • Round 8: *INC1, K7, INC1, SM, K7 SM* {repeat one more time for the other side}

  • I think you have the hang of it now, so you’ll want to repeat rounds 10 & 11 until you’ve reached your desired size.

  • Knit all the STS in the row before you start your border, leaving the 4 stitch markers in place.

Border:

  • Row 1: [P1K1, *P1, K1* P1, KFB | SM | KFB, *K1, P1* K1, P1K1] repeat 1 more time
  • Row 2: *P1, K1* {slip markers as you come to them}
  • Row 3: [KFB, *K1, P1* K1, P1K1| SM | P1K1, *P1, K1* P1, KFB] repeat 1 more time
  • Row 4: *K1, P1* {slip markers as you come to them}
  • Row 5: [P1K1, *P1, K1* P1, KFB | SM | KFB, *K1, P1* K1, P1K1] repeat 1 more time
  • Row 6: *P1, K1* {slip markers as you come to them}
  •  
  • BO: [*KFB, put both STS on right needle slipping the first stitch over the second, BO knitting the knit STS and purling the purl STS {this will give you a stretchy edge} your last stitch before your stitch marker, KFB, put both STS on right needle slipping the first stitch over the second, BO last st, remove stitch marker*]repeat 4 times

  • You can block it if you want to. I blocked mine, several times, and the center never laid completely flat. :(

Abbreviations:

  • * – * – repeat pattern
  • CO – cast-on {long-tail cast-on method}
  • INC1 – make 1 stitch {I use a backwards loop}
  • K – knit stitches {K1 means to knit 1 stitch}
  • KFB – knit the stitch, before slipping off, knit another stitch into the back of the same stitch, slip to right needle
  • P1K1 – purl 1 stitch, without slipping the stitch knit into the same stitch, creating 2 STS.
  • P – purl stitches {P2 means to purl 2 stitches}
  • SM – slip marker
  • STS – stitches
