{FREE} HEAVENLY : Herringbone Lace Hat Knitting Pattern

Multiple photos of a white, lacy knit hat
I enjoyed the herringbone lace knit stitch on Day 19 so much that I had to make something with it. This is such a beautiful stitch. Knitting it in the round, without a seam, is just icing on the cake! This slouchy hat looks gorgeous and feels just as good.

I love this yarn! Every so often there’s a slightly thicker spot and it reminds me that this is an all natural, environmentally friendly wool that came from a farm right here in the USA.

  • Time it took me to knit: 4-6 Hours
  • Gauge: 17 sts & 29 rows per 4” {10cm} square, not blocked, in the herringbone pattern
  • Weight: 1.8 oz {50 g}
  • Measurements: 10” {25cm} high x 8 3/4” {22cm} wide, at its widest point, above the ribbing
  • Circumference: 17” {43cm}
  • Knit in the round

  • Approximately 100 Yards of a Worsted Yarn
  • {I used 3-strand in Soft White {natural} by Morehouse Farm.}
  • Size US 9 {5.5mm} Knitting Needles with a 16” {40cm} Cable
  • Darning Needle
  • Scissors

Be careful not to stretch out the stitch when passing the slipped stitch over during the SKP, they tend to elongate easily.

Rounds 1-6 lean to the left.

Rounds 7-12 lean to the right.

Pattern, Knit In The Round:

  • CO 72 STS, PM, join in the round.
  • Ribbing:
  • Rounds 1-7: *K2, P2* about 1 ½” {4cm} or continue working in pattern to desired length.
  • Modification Option:
  • If you’d like the brim long enough to fold over, work in pattern for about 6” {15cm}, keep in mind that you’ll need about 50 yards more yarn.
  • Herringbone Pattern:
  • Round 1 {and all odd-numbered rounds}: *K*
  • Round 2: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*
  • Round 4: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*
  • Round 6: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*
  • Round 8: remove SM, S3PW, replace SM, *YO, K2, SKP, K2*
  • Round 10: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*
  • Round 12: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*
  • Round 14: remove SM, S3PW, replace SM, *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*
  • Round 16: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*
  • Round 18: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*
  • Round 20: remove SM, S3PW, replace SM, *YO, K2, SKP, K2*
  • Round 22: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*
  • Round 24: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*
  • Rounds 25-48: Repeat rounds 13-24 two more times, or until desired length. The herringbone lace section measures 6 3/4” {17cm}, not including the ribbing.
  • Modification Options:
  • This is easily adjustable. If you’d like more or less slouch, you can end on any knit round and then start the decrease.
  • If you’d like a more gradual decrease you can add a knit round in between each decrease round.
  • Decrease:
  • Next round: Knit {If you’d like, you can place a SM every 9 STS on this round and then knit the 2 stitches together before each SM, so you know when to decrease without having to count STS.} {If you’re unsure about the decrease, this is a good time to use a lifeline.}
  • Round 1: *K*
  • Round 2: *K7, K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 64 remain}
  • Round 3: *K6, K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 56 remain}
  • Round 4: *K5, K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 48 remain}
  • Round 5: *K4, K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 40 remain}
  • Round 6: *K3, K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 32 remain}
  • Round 7: *K2, K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 24 remain}
  • Round 8: *K1, K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 16 remain}
  • Round 9: *K2TOG* {Decrease 8 STS, 8 remain}
  • To End:
  • Do not bind off. Leave a long tail, about 10″ {25cm}, and pull it through the remaining STS. Remove markers. Pull tight and push through the top hole to the inside and then weave in the ends.
  • Blocking is optional, I didn’t block mine. :)

{17 sts & 29 rows per 4” {10cm} square, not blocked, in the herringbone pattern}
White, lacy hat gauge

  • * – * – repeat pattern
  • CO – cast-on {long-tail cast-on method}
  • K – knit stitches {K1 means to knit 1 stitch}
  • K2TOG – knit 2 stitches together
  • PM – place marker
  • S3PW – slip 3 stitches purl-wise from the LH needle to the RH needle {you’ll work these 3 STS at the end of the round. It does create an elongated stitch on the inside. This creates an invisible seam.}
  • SKP – slip 1 stitch purl-wise, knit the next stitch, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch
  • SM – stitch marker
  • STS – stitches
  • YO – yarn over

    What a beautiful hat — I think I’m in love with the herringbone lace, too! ❤️

    Thank you very much for the pattern. Do you plan to add it to Ravelry? I’d love to save it in my favorites there.
