Herringbone Lace Hat Knitting Pattern : Heavenly

This was a fun quick knit! It’s not a simple meditation pattern, it has just enough variance to keep my mind focused on the pattern, yet not complicated enough to be frustrating. It was exciting to watch it grow!
Have you tried Morehouse Farm yarn? It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s so warm you can get away with it being a little lacy. It’s a perfect fall hat!

Not reversible.

Knit in the round with a circular needle.
When knitting in the round you’re always knitting the right side of your work.
Be careful not to stretch out the stitch when passing the slipped stitch over during the SKP, they tend to elongate easily.
Rounds 1-6 lean to the left.
Rounds 7-12 lean to the right.

Pattern, Knit in the Round:

Using US 9 {5.5mm} circular needles with a 16” {40cm} cable.

CO 72 STS, PM, join in the round.

Ribbing:

Rounds 1-7: *K2, P2* about 1 ½” {4cm} or continue working in pattern to desired length.

Modification Option:

If you’d like the brim long enough to fold over, work in pattern for about 6” {15cm}, keep in mind that you’ll need about 50 yards more yarn.

Herringbone Pattern:

Round 1 and all odd-numbered rounds: *K*

Round 2: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*

Round 4: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*

Round 6: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*

Round 8: remove M, S3PW, replace M, *YO, K2, SKP, K2*

Round 10: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*

Round 12: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*

Round 14: remove , S3PW, replace M, *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*

Round 16: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*

Round 18: *K2TOG, K2, YO, K2*

Round 20: remove M, S3PW, replace M, *YO, K2, SKP, K2*

Round 22: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*

Round 24: *YO, K2, SKP, K2*

Rounds 25-48: Repeat rounds 13-24 2 more times, or until desired length. The herringbone lace section measures 6 3/4” {17cm}, not including the ribbing.

Modification options:

This is easily adjustable. If you’d like more or less slouch, you can end on any knit round and then start the decrease.

If you’d like a more gradual decrease you can add a knit round in between each decrease round.

Note {Optional}:

When the stitches get too tight switch to DPNs or a longer cable and knit using the magic loop method.

Decrease for the crown:

Round 1: *K*

Round 2: *K7, K2TOG, PM* {-8 STS, 64 remain}

Round 3: *K6, K2TOG, SM* {-8 STS, 56 remain}

Round 4: *K5, K2TOG, SM* {-8 STS, 48 remain}

Round 5: *K4, K2TOG, SM* {-8 STS, 40 remain}

Round 6: *K3, K2TOG, SM* {-8 STS, 32 remain}

Round 7: *K2, K2TOG, SM* {-8 STS, 24 remain}

Round 8: *K1, K2TOG, SM* {-8 STS, 16 remain}

Round 9: *K2TOG, remove stitch marker* {-8 STS, 8 remain}

End:

Without binding-off, cut the yarn leaving a 10” {25cm} tail, pull it through the remaining STS, push through the top hole to the inside and then weave in the ends.

Block, if desired. {I didn’t block mine.}

Abbreviations:

* – * – repeat between *
CO – cast-on {long-tail cast-on method}
DPNs – double pointed needles
K – knit stitches {K1 means to knit 1 stitch}
K2TOG – knit 2 stitches together
SM – stitch marker
P – purl stitches {P2 means to purl 2 stitches}
PM – place stitch marker
