You can use any weight of yarn, the thinner the yarn, the smaller the pumpkin.

Pattern, Knit in the Round:
5 Stripes: CO 25 STS, PM, join in the round
6 Stripes: CO 30 STS, PM, join in the round
7 Stripes: CO 35 STS, PM, join in the round
8 Stripes: CO 40 STS, PM, join in the round
Rows 1 – 20: *K4, P1* {make it larger by knitting more rounds}
Decrease for the Top:
Row 21: *K2, K2TOG, P1*
Row 22: *K1, K2TOG, P1*
Row 23: *K2TOG, P1*
Turn right-side out, do not bind-off, leave a long tail, about 10″, and pull it through the remaining STS, fill with your filling of choice, pull tight and then weave in the ends.
