Basic Cowl Knitting Pattern

Looking for a beginner knitting pattern that you can feel good in when you’re finished?! This is a basic cowl pattern knitted flat using the seed stitch, using only knit & purl stitches.

There’s an advanced beginner version if you know the basics and you’re ready to learn a new technique.

Gauge

6 STS & 9 rows per 4″ (10cm) square, knit in the seed stitch pattern

Measurements, before seaming: 12″ height x 68″ long (30cm x 172cm)

Notes

Reversible.
The CO edge is the height.
Knit using the seed knit stitch.
Knit holding 2 strands of yarn together throughout.
This cowl is knit flat, when you’re finished knitting you’ll sew the CO & BO edges together to make it a cowl.
CO in any odd number of stitches. If you cast-on an even number of stitches, you’ll create a rib stitch instead of a seed stitch.

Knitting Abbreviations

* – * – repeat between the asterisks to end of row
BO – bind-off in pattern
CO – cast-on (long-tail cast-on method)
K – knit stitches (K1 means to knit 1 stitch)
P – purl stitches (P2 means to purl 2 stitches)
STS – stitches

Beginner Pattern Instructions

CO 17 STS

All rows: *K1, P1* K1

Repeat until it’s 68″ long (172cm), or desired length.

You have a couple of options here:

  1. Sew the CO & BO ends together to make it a cowl/infinity scarf, as pictured.
  2. Don’t sew the ends together and wear it as a scarf.

Weave in the ends.

Lightly steam iron, if desired.

Advanced Beginner Pattern Instructions

CO 19 STS

Row 1: WYIF S1PW *K1, P1* K1, WYIF S1PW

Row 2: K1TBL *K1, P1* K1, K1TBL

Repeat rows 1-2 until it’s 68″ long (172cm), or desired length.

You have a couple of options here:

  1. Sew the CO & BO ends together to make it a cowl/infinity scarf, as pictured.
  2. Don’t sew the ends together and wear it as a scarf.

Weave in the ends.

Lightly steam iron, if desired.
