This is a beginner knitting pattern alternating 2 different colors in garter stitch.

Knit Flat {Back & Forth}



Yarn Weight: Worsted Cotton

Yardage: 110 – 120 yards {101 – 110 meters}

Suggested Yarn: Knit Picks Multi Dishie, Aquamarine & Swan

Needle Size: US 6 {4mm} Knitting Needles



Measurements: 17 1/2″L x 7″ {45cm x 18cm}

Gauge: 17 STS & 34 rows per 4” {10cm} square {knit flat in the pattern below}

Weight: 2.1oz {60g}




The CO edge is the length.

Knit using the Garter Stitch.

Alternate color every 3rd row.




Pattern, Knit Flat {Back and Forth}:

Using color 1 {I started with swan, white}


Row 1: *K*

Switching to color 2 {I used Dishie in Aquarium Multi}

Row 2: *K*

Row 3: *K*

Switch back to color 1

Row 4: *K*

Row 5: *K*

Repeat rows 2-5, until it measures about 7” {18cm},or until desired width.

On the next row, using color 1, BO, in all knit stitches.

You can block it if you’d like to, it’s not required, but it helps square it up and even out the stitches.

Weave in the ends.

No blocking necessary.



* – * – repeat between * to end of round

BO – bind-off in pattern

CO – cast-on {long-tail cast-on method}

K – knit stitches {K1 means to knit 1 stitch}

P – purl stitches {P2 means to purl 2 stitches}

STS – stitches
