Pattern, Knit in the Round:
Using US 11 {8mm} circular knitting needles with a 16” {40cm} cable
CO 44 STS, PM, join in the round
Rounds 1-17: *K2, P2*
Switch to US 13 {9mm} circular knitting needles with a 16” {40cm} cable
Round 18: *K*
Round 19-20: *K1, P3*
Round 21&24: *K*
Round 22-23: P2, K1 *P3, K1* P1
Repeat rounds 19-23, 3 more times
Note {Optional}:
When the stitches get too tight switch to DPNs or a longer cable and knit using the magic loop method.
Decrease for the crown:
Round 37: [{K4, K2TOG x2} K5, K2TOG] x2 K4, K2TOG {-7 STS 37 STS remaining}
Round 38: [{K3, K2TOG x2} K4, K2TOG] x2 K3, K2TOG {-7 STS 30 STS remaining}
Round 39: [{K2, K2TOG x2} K3, K2TOG] x2 K2, K2TOG {-7 STS 23 STS remaining}
Round 40: [{K1, K2TOG x2} K2, K2TOG] x2 K1, K2TOG {-7 STS 16 STS remaining}
Round 41: [{K2TOG x2} K1, K2TOG] x2, K2TOG {-7 STS 9 STS remaining} {remove stitch markers as you come to them}
End:
Without binding-off, cut the yarn leaving a 10” tail, pull it through the remaining STS, push through the top hole to the inside and then weave in the ends.
Block:
To block this hat I use a saucer. Like a teacup and saucer. ;) I put it inside the hat, so the bottom “swirl” is in the center of the saucer and the saucer is bulging outward, spritz it with some water, pat dry with a clean towel and let it dry overnight
Abbreviations:

K – knit stitches {K1 means to knit 1 stitch}
