About the Pattern

This is a super easy, beginner-friendly blanket knitting pattern. It’s knit in one piece using circular knitting needles with a long cable, so you have enough room for all the stitches.

This blanket is knit using only knit stitches on the right and wrong side of you work, which creates the beautiful garter stitch. The extra thickness makes your blanket extra squishy and warm.

AND I love that it’s a fairly quick knit using bulky yarn!

Techniques

Some basic knitting knowledge will help, but this pattern is great project for a beginner knitter.

Here are some of the knitting skills you need to know before getting started:

Knit Flat (Back & Forth)
Knit Stitch
Clean Edge

No ribbing, decreases, stripes or borders… not even a purl stitch :)

This is knit in garter stitch pattern using all knit stitches, not in the stockinette stitch which uses knit and purl stitches. :)

Yarn, Needles & Notions

Yarn Weight: Bulky
Yardage: 555 – 2220 yards (507 – 2028 meters)
Suggested Yarn: Lion Brand Homespun
I used a US 10 (6mm) Circular Needles with a 40″ (100 cm) Cable
Darning needle or crochet hook is needed to weave in the ends.
Cable needles and stitch markers are not required. :)

Lion Brand Homespun is an acrylic polyester fiber blend yarn.

The acrylic yarn makes for a great option for a baby blanket knitting pattern because it makes it naturally hypoallergenic.

Yarn Substitutions

You can really use any yarn you want to for this pattern. If you happen to have a lot of worsted weight yarn, you can knit it holding 2 strands of yarn together to get the bulky weight.

Here are a few suggestions from yarnsub.com:
Anthem Chunky by Cascade Yarns
Boho Chunky by Cygnet
Hobbii Glitter Delight

There are lots of other yarns to choose from too. You can check them out here: https://yarnsub.com/yarns/lion_brand/homespun.

If you go with a different yarn, you’ll probably need a different size of needle too. The size of needle depends on the yarn you choose. Knit a swatch, starting with the recommended needle size on the package and then size up if the stitch is too tight (if it feels hard) and size down if the stitch is too loose (if you can see through it). This requires a little bit of trial and error. You don’t need a large swatch, just one that’s big enough to get the feel of a nice squishy stitch.

You can have some fun using different yarn colors too!

Notes

This blanket is reversible.
The cast-on edge is the width.
It’s knit using the garter stitch.
It’s knit flat, back & forth, on circular needles. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of CO stitches.

Modification Options

If you’re using a worsted weight yarn, you’ll want to cast-on more stitches than the patterns calls for to get the desired size.

If you’d like to use a super bulky yarn, cast-on fewer stitches than the patterns calls for to get the desired size. (Chunky yarns will make this blanket warmer, cozier and even quicker to knit. Just sayin’!)

The best way to decide on how many stitches to cast-on is to create a 4″ x 4″ swatch and  then count your stitches, so you have a better idea of how many to cast-on.

Knitting Abbreviations

*– * – repeat between * to end of round
BO – bind-off in pattern
CO – cast-on (long-tail cast-on method)
K – knit stitches (K1 means to knit 1 stitch)
K1TBL – knit 1 stitch through the back loop
S1PW – slip one stitch purl-wise
STS – stitches
WYIF – with yarn in front
