Modification Options

Get creative and use up your leftover yarn creating a faded or patchwork-ish style shawl. You could even you 2 different weights, styles and/or colors of yarn. Your options are endless!

If you’re on a budget, then your best options are the ones in your stash. ;)

Choose a needle size that will give you a relaxed stitch, not too tight because that’ll make the fabric stiff and not too loose making the fabric too airy.

You want your tension somewhere in the middle, kinda like Goldilocks.

“Ahhh, this stitch is just right.” said Goldilocks as she happily knit the night away.

Free Knitting Pattern

Knit Flat (Row-by-Row)
CO 1 stitch

To increase:
Row 1: KFB

Row 2: *K*
Row 3: *K*
Row 4: *K*
Row 5: KFB *K*
Repeat rows 2-5 until it measures 37” (94mm) from the beginning, or desired length.

You’ll have approx. 83 STS on your needles, which is about 18″, if your gauge is the same as mine.

Once it’s as long & wide as you want you’re ready to start decreasing.

This is where you’ll want to double check to make sure you have enough yarn to finish your knitted shawl. ;) Just sayin’.

To decrease:
Row 1: *K*
Row 2: *K*
Row 3: *K*
Row 4: K1, SKP, *K*
Repeat rows 1-4 until you have 4 STS

To end:
Row 1-3: *K*
Row 4: K1, SKP, K1 {3 STS remaining}
Row 5: K1, SKP {2 STS remaining}
Row 6: SKP {1 STS remaining}

Weave in the ends.
Steam-block lightly.

FAQ

What does *K* mean?

It means to knit all the stitches in that row.

Can I make it longer, without making it wider?

Let’s establish length vs width first:
The width is the number of stitches you have on your needles.
The length is the number of rows you have, it’s the part that wraps around you.

To make it longer and not wider add 2 more knitted rows, like this:
Row 1: KFB

Row 2: *K*
Row 3: *K*
Row 4: *K*
Row 5: *K*
Row 6: *K*
Row 7: KFB *K*
Repeat rows 2-7 until desired length.

Story time

:) Confession: Me vs the Garter Stitch (*heavy sigh*)

Once upon a time, in two thousand and eleven, I learned how to knit.

And I refused to knit anything using the garter stitch, the stitch where you knit every row, front and back. It was just “too simple”… it was for newbies.

(Clearly I was in denial of being a beginner knitter.)

However, now as a seasoned knitter I’m finally embracing the garter stitch. And I’m in love!

The garter stitch creates the perfect texture, stretch and squish for any cozy project (if I do say so myself :).
