Find your new favorite Broken Rib Stitch pattern! An easy to knit & memorize stitch for some mindless knitting at the end of a long day🫶

Do you love doing a little mindless knitting? A pattern that you can pull out at the end of a long day and just knit away without a worry in the world? Well, I’d like to introduce you to the Broken Rib Stitch. It’s easy to knit & easy to memorize!
Just sit back and relish in all that texture and simplicity. Plus, it’s easy enough for a beginner knitter, that can easily tell the difference between a knit & purl stitches.
What’s to love?!
- Gorgeous texture.
- Great pattern to travel with.
- Easy pattern to read & memorize.
- More knit stitches than purl stitches.
- Looks beautiful in every type of yarn.
What is the Broken Rib Stitch?
It’s a simple 2 row repeat. On the first row you’re going to knit 1, purl 1 all the way across, as if ribbing. The next row is all knit stitches, breaking the rib stitch pattern. Hence the name, Broken Rib Stitch.
Do you like the minimalist style? You just might fall in love with the Broken Rib Stitch! It’s 2 rows on repeat, creating a subtle texture that simple and pleasing to the eye. That lovely texture is squishy and cozy creating a bit of an air gap, so it’s adds extra warmth to you wardrobe.
Broken Rib Stitch Pattern:
CO in multiples of 2 stitches, plus 1
Row 1 (WS): *P1, K1* P1
Row 2 (RS): *K*
Repeat Rows 1-2 until desired length.
I like to do the +1 T the end of row 1 because it makes the first and last stitch edges look the same, it’s not necessary though.
Abbreviations:
*– * – repeat between *
CO – cast-on (long-tail cast-on method)
K – knit stitches (K1 means to knit 1 stitch)
P – purl stitches (P2 means to purl 2 stitches)
Simple Designs for a Simple Stitch
I recently realized that the Broken Rib Stitch is one of my favorite designs. I’ve created over 14 designs using this simple stitch and I just keep coming back to it.

Simple, Yet Unique, Hat Knitting Pattern
This hat is knit in the round from the bottom up. It’s just 2 rows on repeat until you get to the crown, which it optional. You can easily add a ribbed brim, if that’s your style.
Just look at that texture! Love it!!!

Simple, Yet Engaging, Hat Knitting Pattern
This hat took a little more time than I’m used to, but it’s so worth the wait! It’s knit from the bottom up with a double brim and the yarn is sooo soft. It’s super cute & cozy too!

Chunky Leg Warmers Knitting Pattern
I like to get my money’s worth out of my yarn, so I created this leg warmer pattern to get one pair of leg warmers out of 1 skein of yarn. Win-win!

Bulky Hat Knitting Pattern
This is a slouchy hat that’s knit out of one skein of yarn. What can I say? I like being efficient, productive and practical. lol. Easily turn this into a toque by adding a ribbed brim and shortening the body.

Boho Headband Knitting Pattern
This headband has a fun twist. Knit flat in one piece and then separate the 2 “legs,” cross them over each other and then bring them back together again.

Chunky Shawl Knitting Pattern
Sometimes you just want to be wrapped up in a warm hug. That’s what I had in mind when I created this shawl. It’s knit starting at the bottom tip to the longest edge at the top, making it easy to adjust the size or bind-off when you run out of yarn. I knit it using Wool and the Gang’s Crazy Sexy Wool, so it’s super soft, cozy and warm.

Cozy Shrug Knitting Pattern
This shrug knits up relatively quickly using Lion Brand Hue + Me bulky yarn. Since it’s just knit and purl stitches, it makes for a great 1st time garment pattern.

Chunky Knit Blanket Pattern
This blanket is super thick & cozy! I held 2 strands of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn together to create this wonderfully warm throw blanket.

Oversized Cowl Knitting Pattern
This cowl is knit in the round using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. And, of course, you get to choose if you wear it right side out or wrong side out since both sides are beautiful!

Leg Warmers Knitting Pattern
I spiced these leg warmer’s up a bit by using the broken rib stitch at the top and bottom ribbing instead of the standard rib stitch. Just doing things a little different. ;)

Patchwork Shrug Knitting Pattern
The Broken Rib Stitch is just 1 of 5 different stitches used in this pattern, all of which use just knit and purl stitches, making it a great beginner project.

Easy Cowl Knitting Pattern
I love the wrong side just as much as the right side, I’m not sure which is my favorite. I’d wear it either way, depending on my mood.

Simple Headband Knitting Pattern
This is a simple headband pattern that’s knit in the round. No seam. Yay!! It’s knit with super bulky yarn so it knits up quickly and you can get a couple out of one skein, so you can knit one for a friend too! …or to donate.

I hope you found a new pattern using the Broken Rib Stitch that you fell in love with!
