Several of these patterns are size inclusive for larger sizes, and smaller for the kiddos too. Keep in mind for those of you that have a larger bust size, you might want to go up a size, or two, for more coverage.
Also, you can add a button to wear it like a jacket or cardigan. Have I mentioned how simple and versatile shrug patterns are?! The modification options are limitless.
Most of these patterns use several skeins of super chunky yarn {my favorite kind of yarn!}. You’ll need circular needles because of the large number of cast-on stitches required.
If you haven’t knit flat using circular knitting needles, you’re in for a double treat. I love knitting flat with circular needles, it’s so much easier on my hands, wrists and forearms.
Looking for a quick & easy shrug knitting pattern? That requires no shaping, no sleeve island and no picking up stitches? That is knit flat, back & forth, row by row in a rectangle, like a blanket, with only minimal seaming.
Sounds a little too good to be true, right?! Nope! All of these knitting patterns are one rectangle, without any shaping! :)
Beginner Shrug Patterns
These are the 2 shrug patterns I recommend for beginners! The top one is in garter stitch, which is all knit stitches, it’s as easy as it gets.
The 2nd one below is all knit and purl stitches, without a border, making it a 2 row repeat. ;)
The above garter stitch shrug is the perfect meditative knitting pattern.
These are a great way to get your toes wet on your way to knitting your first sweater.

FAQ:
It’s a garment that’s a cross between a jacket and a blanket. It’s part blanket, because it’s a rectangle, like a blanket and then you seam 2 edges creating “sleeves” like a jacket. It’s brilliant, really!
Honestly, your favorite. It’s the one you’re going to enjoy knitting with and love wearing! So, find a pattern that fits your favorite yarn.
You’ll need circular needles because of the large number of cast-on stitches required. Cast-on the stitches stated in the pattern and knit your rectangle.
In some of the patterns, the cast-on edge is the width {across the shoulders} and in some the cast-on edge is the height {shoulder to bum}. You’ll need to check the note section.
After you bind-off, you’ll sew 2 seams to create the sleeves and then it’s ready to snuggle up in!
It depends. It depends on the weight of yarn you’re using. The thinner the yarn, the longer it takes. So, the thicker the yarn the quicker the knit!
It also depends on how fast you knit. Knitting continental style tends to be faster than the English method of knitting.
If you’re concerned about speed I highly recommend Googling “How to knit continental style.” Knitting fast and accurate with consistent stitches takes time, patience and repetition.
Just like with any sport, you have to put in your reps. ;) {It really just means you get to knit more stuff! Wahoo!}
It depends on the shrug. For most of the patterns above you’ll bring the CO and BO corners together. Sew the CO & BO edges together starting from the outside corner working your way in to create the sleeves.
The amount you seam depends on the size. For one that measures about 45″/115cm across I seamed, 6″/15cm on each side.
