Think cozy. Think squishy. Think soft, warm, and so light it feels like a cloud. The Misty Dewdrop Blanket is a free bulky knit pattern you’ll want to make again and again. I never expected this stitch to become my go-to—when I filmed my 100 Days of Knitting Stitches series, I bypassed it, assuming it was just another name for brioche.

About the Stitch: Fisherman’s Rib
Don’t let the texture fool you — this stitch looks fancy, but it’s secretly very beginner-friendly. The fisherman’s rib stitch creates a gorgeously plush fabric that’s stretchy, breathable, and oh-so-squishy. If you love the look of brioche but want something easier and more intuitive to knit, fisherman’s rib is your new best friend. I had knit brioche already, so Fisherman’s Rib felt like an unexpectedly soothing stitch… once I settled into it, it became a go-to for rhythm and comfort.
Here’s why it’s so perfect for a blanket like this:
- It’s thick and lofty without being heavy.
Fisherman’s rib creates deep, dimensional stitches that trap warmth and feel extra cozy, but because it has so much air between the rows, the final blanket still feels light and breathable. - It has incredible squish + stretch.
The ribbing naturally expands and contracts, making the blanket ultra snuggly and drapey without becoming floppy. It hugs you in all the right ways. - It’s repetitive and soothing to knit.
Once you get into the rhythm, it’s just variations of knit and purl stitches. Perfect for movie nights, audio books, or simply zoning out with your yarn. - It looks beautiful on both sides.
There’s no “wrong side.” Just layers of fluffy, textured goodness. It’s a win for blankets, scarves, and anything that might be seen from multiple angles. - Beginner-friendly with a modern finish.
Even if you’re newer to knitting, this stitch gives you a polished, designer look without needing to learn complex techniques.
✨ Pro tip: If you’re brand new to fisherman’s rib, I’ve got a video tutorial (coming soon!) that walks you through every step.
Yarn & Substitutions
I used the lovely Holst Garn Cielo in the color Coal. If you’re looking for some in the USA, I found mine at this cute LYS in Kansas City… and it’s reasonably priced. 😘🤗
Alternative Yarn Substitute Options:
If a cloud and a hug had a baby, it would be this yarn. The Misty Dewdrop Blanket is knit in a luxuriously soft merino and alpaca blend that’s surprisingly light for a bulky-weight yarn — it has that magical combo of loft, warmth, and breathability that makes it perfect for blankets. The yarn feels delicate in your hands, but it holds its shape beautifully and creates a drapey, airy fabric with incredible squish.
So, why does this fiber blend work so well?
The merino wool brings springy softness and natural warmth, while alpaca adds a glowing halo and insulating power without extra weight. The small percentage of polyamide (nylon) helps with durability and structure, making this the kind of blanket you’ll use daily and love for years. It’s the best of all worlds: soft enough for sensitive skin, light enough for year-round use, and cozy enough for winter nights.

Needles & Notions
US 15 (10mm) Circular Needles with a 24″ (60cm) Cable, or longer, depending on the size you’re knitting.
Gauge:
10.5 STS & 12.5 rows per 4” (10cm) square, knit in the fisherman rib stitch
Tips & Customizations
One of the best things about the Misty Dewdrop Blanket is how easily it adapts to your style, your yarn, and your space. Whether you’re knitting for a baby, a dorm, or your dream hygge home, you can personalize this pattern to match your vision… or your stash. It’s simple to adjust the size, weight, or fiber without sacrificing the soft, airy texture that makes this blanket so special.
Customize It Your Way:
- Adjust the width or length to fit your space.
This pattern is built on a simple stitch repeat, so you can easily add or subtract rows and stitches to make it exactly the size you want — from a narrow runner to an oversized throw. - Swap in super bulky yarn for a weighted, extra-squishy version.
Want that “wrapped-in-a-hug” feeling? Try using a super bulky yarn instead of standard bulky. You’ll get a thicker, heavier blanket that still feels soft and breathable, like the coziest hug you’ve ever knit. You might need to size up your needles! - Add fringe or a decorative border for a personal touch.
Keep it clean and modern, or finish your edges with playful fringe, a single crochet trim, or even i-cord for that designer finish. - Use your stash or go for tonal gradients.
This blanket is perfect for showing off yarn you already have — especially if you want to try color-blocking, marling, or holding yarns double for a unique look. - Not a fan of synthetic blends? Try a wool-alternative yarn.
While this pattern shines in a merino-alpaca-polyamide mix, you can easily substitute a yarn that’s 100% natural if you prefer. (See Yarn & Substitutions for recommended yarns!)
✨ Make it yours — and don’t be surprised if one blanket turns into a whole cozy collection. 😉
