Free Shawl Knitting Patterns
If you’re looking for some free shawl knitting patterns for beginners, you’ve come to the right place!
Below I share several of my beginner shawl knitting patterns that will get you started on your first knitted shawl.
Choose from a variety of: Triangle Shawls, Asymmetrical Shawls and Chunky Knit Shawls, all of which are beginner shawl patterns.
If you’re looking for something even easier, you can try a shrug knitting pattern.
Triangle Shawls
These triangle shawls are knit from the bottom-up, starting at the tip and knitting your way to the top, increasing evenly as you work you way up.
Create your own sacred space when you wrap up in this oversized triangle shawl. This shawl is knitted using the moss stitch which gives you the perfect drape, without any curling.
Create instant warmth & comfort when you snuggle up in this oversized chunky scarf. Grab 4 skeins of super bulky yarn and knit this triangle scarf shawl in a weekend! (video tutorial included)
It feels like you’re snuggle up in a cloud when you knit this shawl using Wool and the Gang’s Crazy Sexy Wool. I used about 5 balls of yarn with large needles, so it knits up quickly! This shawl is a little more advanced because it has a pretty edge, but there’s a video tutorial to help you get started. (You got this 🙌!)
Wrap yourself in warmth and coziness with this chunky knit shawl. If this is your first time knitting a shawl, then this is the pattern I recommend. This shawl is pretty much knit stitch on repeat with increases on every other row. It doesn’t get any easier than this!
Asymmetrical Shawls
These asymmetrical shawls are knit from the left to right while increasing one edge until you reach the desired width.
Practice slowing down and treat yourself to hand knitting a cozy shawl to winter blues. This shawl is knit starting at the tip, in garter stitch and then increase a stitch every 4th row. Yup, it really is that simple! I hope you find peace and comfort knitting in every stitch.

Start your love affair with chunky knit shawls using this seed stitch shawl knitting pattern. Starting at one end, put the seed stitch on repeat to get the perfect amount of texture, squish and coziness to cuddle-up in.
Side-to-Side Shawls
The below shawls are knit from left to right while increasing one edge until you reach the desired width and then decreased on one edge until there’s one stitch left.
This is hands down one of my most popular shawl patterns. Simple, classic design with lots of squish. What’s not to love?! 😍
This is my latest shawl pattern, inspired by my most popular design (#8), using the infamous seed stitch giving us more of that texture we love. 🥰
Bring some hygge into your life with a hand knitted shawl, or three. It’s the little things that make shawls the perfect accessory or gift… the simplicity, the softness, the weight, the warmth, the all encompassing feelings of comfort & healing that feels like coming home, the sense of peace that you’ve been longing for…
May peace and joy be with you, my friend.
